A Foundation of Unvetted Assumptions
You spend months obsessing over the friction of your onboarding flow, the juice of your UI, and the balance of your economy, only to realize that the most prominent piece of data in your game is a lie.
For years, I did something similar with language, walking around with a secret, internal leaderboard of words I thought I knew how to use. I spent a decade pronouncing “awry” as “aw-ree,” convinced it was some exotic, sophisticated term for things going sideways, until a podcast guest corrected me mid-sentence while the “Record” light was still red.
It is a specific kind of humiliation to realize that the structure you’ve been presenting to the world-whether it’s a pronunciation or a racing game’s top ten-is built on a foundation of unvetted assumptions. We treat the leaderboard as an objective ranking of skill, but structurally, it is just a chart of volunteered numbers that the server agreed to print because it was never told to be skeptical.

You see a number on a screen and your brain assigns it the authority of a measurement instrument, forgetting that the axis label was a lie from day one. A leaderboard implies that an authority did the ranking, that a referee watched the match, and that the laws of physics-or at least the laws of the game’s code-were enforced. But in reality, the rendering itself is the false claim; the shiny, sorted, decimal-precise table is a mask for a chaotic stream of unverified pings.

It wasn’t until someone pointed out that he had actually suffered cramps at mile nine, hitched a ride in a manager’s car for the next , and only hopped back out to run the final stretch into the stadium that the “data” was corrected. The officials hadn’t been watching the road; they were only watching the finish line. We do the same thing with our Unity projects, watching the “SubmitScore” endpoint while ignoring the twelve miles of memory manipulation and speed-hacking that happened before the player ever reached the “Game Over” screen.
The Mirror of Data
You watch the dashboard refresh with the optimism of a founder; you see the DAU climb into the low thousands; you notice a sudden spike in the “Platinum Tier” unlocks; you feel a brief, electric surge of pride before the logic kicks in; you realize that no human player could have harvested that much ore in three minutes; you see the pattern of the UID suffixes repeating like a broken record; you grasp, finally, that your economy is currently being liquidated by a script written in a bedroom in a different timezone.
The chart tells you the game is popular. The chart tells you the players are skilled. The chart tells you the world is fair. But the chart is only a mirror of the data you allowed into the system, and if you aren’t protecting the runtime, you are just hosting a very expensive, very public fiction.

When trust leaks out of a community, it doesn’t leave through a hole; it evaporates from the surface, leaving a bitter residue behind that makes everything feel cheap.
Shielding the Memory
We have to stop treating security as a “later” problem or a backend-only problem, because by the time the data reaches your server, the crime has already been committed and the evidence has been bleached. You need to defend the game while it’s actually being played, shielding the in-memory values and the internal clock from the moment the executable launches.
This is why studios have moved toward using Anti-Cheat for Unity as a drop-in replacement for the standard Unity APIs, protecting the very variables that the leaderboard relies on. If you aren’t protecting the memory, you aren’t measuring skill; you are just measuring who has the best hex editor. It’s the difference between a referee who watches the whole game and a guy who just checks the scoreboard at the end of the night to see what the home team wrote on it with a Sharpie.
You might think that your players don’t notice the subtle corruption, but the “vibe” of a game is heavily dictated by its perceived integrity. The technical debt of an insecure game is a tax on your future self, paid in the currency of midnight hotfixes and community-management nightmares. You end up spending your time deleting rows in a SQL database instead of designing new levels, acting as a janitor for a digital building where the doors don’t have locks.
We have a tendency to view these problems as moral failings of the “hackers,” but in a business sense, they are simply data-integrity failures. If your system allows a value to be 2.1 billion, and it is physically impossible for that value to be 2.1 billion, the fault lies with the system’s lack of self-awareness. We need to build games that know their own limits, that understand the weight of their own items, and that refuse to believe a player who says they just ran a marathon in four seconds.

You can see this same pattern of “authority by presentation” in almost every dashboard we use in modern life, from the step counters that can be fooled by a vigorous shake of the wrist to the “engagement” metrics that ignore the fact that half the traffic is bot-driven. We crave the order of a list; we find comfort in the ranking, in the idea that someone, somewhere, is keeping track of who is “best.”
But the ranking is only as good as the provenance of the data. If the provenance is a “self-reported claim” wrapped in a “pretty UI,” then the ranking is just a decorative element, a piece of digital wallpaper that we’ve mistaken for a structural beam.
Beyond Banning the Cheaters
